Varieties of bread from the Balearic Islands

Specialties

Among the varieties of farmhouse bread, we can find white, brown, rye, three-grain and wholemeal bread.

As for their specialities, the classic ensaimadas stand out, such as the plain, the sweet pumpkin jam, the almond, the burnt cream and the cream. They also make ensaimadas with Kinder chocolate, cream and pine nuts, chocolate cream and, the most popular, cream and chocolate-covered walnuts. Another outstanding product is the almond ‘coca de gató’ (a kind of sponge cake).

They also make typical Mallorcan products for each holiday or season. At Christmas they offer handmade nougat, Christmas cakes, shortbread, Yule logs and marzipan ensaimadas; for Sant Antoni, pork and chicken pastries; for Valentine’s Day, love-themed cakes; and for Carnival, ensaimadas with carvings. At Easter, they have a wide range of pies, including sweet pastry, sweet cheese and cuttlefish. They also make cream and pine nut cakes for St John’s Day and pumpkin cakes for All Saints’ Day, and for the festival of Our Lady of the Virgins, they make fritters with different fillings, such as cream, truffle, whipped cream and caramel, among others.
