Varieties of bread from the Balearic Islands

Specialties

Among the varieties of peaants´ bread, white bread, brown bread and wholemeal bread stand out. They also make other types such as xeixa bread, corn bread, rye bread, as well as German breads, round breads with salt and baguettes, among others.

 

As for pastries, potato cakes and ensaimadas are the most popular. The most successful among their customers are the burnt cream and angel hair cakes.

 

Another of their specialities are empanadas (panades), such as meat and lamb with savoury or sweet pastry. There are also cuttlefish, chicken, chicken with onion, chicken with onion and peas, peas with botifarró sausage and sobrasada, and trempó with tuna.

 

In addition, they make traditional products for each holiday, such as roscones de Reyes for Christmas, which can be plain or filled with cream, burnt cream, chocolate, nougat or truffle. They also make borregos, an aniseed-flavoured brioche dough that is baked in the oven until it is toasted. In Alaró, they are traditionally eaten with sobrasada or botifarró sausage during Sant Antoni festivity.

Featured information

In 2021, Verònica Martínez and Juanjo Barea took over the management of the Can na Juanita bakery when the previous owners retired without any family to take over. They have continued the long tradition of this well-known bakery in the village, maintaining the same products as always.
