Llonguet

Small oblong bread, very pale in colour, with an elastic, spongy crumb. The top is crossed by a longitudinal groove. It is said that the better the quality of the flour and the more care taken in the preparation of the ‘llonguet’, the deeper the central slit. It is eaten as a sandwich.

In “Die Balearen” (1869-1891), Archduke Ludwig Salvator refers to ‘llonguets’ and their consumption in Palma: ‘… the citizens do not eat as much bread as the country people, but it is usually of better quality; they prefer these rolls, which are small, long, well-baked, very white loaves, with a cut in the middle’.

In popular parlance, a ‘llonguet’ is also a person who was born or lives in Palma. This way of referring to the inhabitants of Palma comes from the fact that ‘llonguets’ are a type of bread that is typical here and that was not made in the villages.
